Resume
The Reverend Dr. Winston B. Charles has served as rector of Christ Church, Raleigh, since August of 1993. He is married to Judy Hunter Charles, an occupational therapist. Both Judy and Winston grew up in Bennettsville, South Carolina. Their daughter Julia Charles attends Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina.
After graduating from Bennettsville High School, Winston attended the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, following his father and brother and soon joined by one of his sisters. Majoring in English, Winston graduated in 1970 and returned to Bennettsville to teach English in his former high school. Having been married in 1970, Winston and Judy moved to Alexandria, Virginia, for three wonderful years at Virginia Theological Seminary, from which Winston graduated with honors in 1974. The Right Reverend
Gray Temple ordained him in the same year. For the next eleven years, Winston served congregations in the Diocese of South Carolina, moving from two small missions near Beaufort to an assistantship at Grace Church, Charleston, and finally to establishing a new Episcopal church in Summerville, South Carolina, which grew to a parish during his tenure. In 1985, with a one-year-old daughter, Judy and Winston moved to New York City in order to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy degree in church history; his dissertation was The Dynamic of Remembrance in the Theology of Martin Luther. During eight years in New York, in addition to academic work, Winston served as part-time interim rector at St. Andrews, Staten Island, and as a part-time assistant on the staff of St. James, Manhattan. From St. James Winston was called to become rector of Christ Church, Raleigh.
The twelve years at Christ Church have been marked by a significant increase in membership and in budget. Since the General Convention of 2003, the parish has sought to respect the varying opinions of parishioners and to find ways by which the congregation can continue to move forward together as an Episcopal parish. During these years in the Diocese of North Carolina, Winston has served the diocese as convocation dean, alternate and deputy to General Convention, member of the Commission on Ministry and the Standing Committee, and in various other capacities. Beyond the diocese Winston has served on the boards of the Historical Society of the Episcopal Church and the Consortium of Endowed Episcopal Parishes and on both the Board of Trustees and the Board of Regents of the University of the South.
